A new boiler installation should begin well before the old appliance is removed. The survey and written scope set the job up properly and give the homeowner a clear way to compare quotes.
Before installation: survey and specification
The survey should cover the existing boiler, hot-water demand, radiators, pipework, controls, flue route, condensate drainage and access. In flats or period properties, there may also be building or routing constraints to resolve.
The written quote should name the boiler and controls, identify any system changes, explain cleaning and protection, and state what is included in removal, commissioning and registration.
Preparing the property
The engineer needs safe access to the boiler, controls and relevant pipework. Floors and nearby surfaces should be protected before work begins. Water, heating, gas and electricity may be unavailable for parts of the installation, so the expected sequence should be discussed in advance.
Removing the old boiler
The old appliance is isolated and removed. A like-for-like replacement is usually simpler than a relocation or a conversion from a cylinder-based system to a combi. The quote should say whether tanks, cylinders or redundant pipework are also being removed.
Installing and protecting the system
The new boiler, flue, condensate route and controls are fitted to the agreed specification. The appropriate system-cleaning method depends on the condition and design of the heating circuit. The installer should explain the method and any filter or inhibitor included.
Commissioning and notification
The boiler must be commissioned and safety checks completed. Where required, the installation is notified through Gas Safe so the homeowner receives the relevant Building Regulations compliance documentation.
Handover
The homeowner should be shown how to use the boiler and controls, check system pressure and respond to common warnings. The handover should also explain servicing and manufacturer warranty conditions, including any registration steps.
