Winter is the worst time for a boiler to break down. Here are five simple checks you can do right now to make sure your heating system is ready for the cold months ahead.

Why Boiler Maintenance Matters in Autumn

As temperatures drop, your boiler works harder than at any other time of year. A little preparation now can save you from a cold house — and an expensive emergency call-out.

5 Things to Check Before Winter

5 Things to Check Before Winter

    1. Bleed Your Radiators

If your radiators are cold at the top but warm at the bottom, there's trapped air inside. Use a radiator key to bleed them and restore full heat output.

    2. Check Your Boiler Pressure

Your boiler pressure should sit between 1 and 1.5 bar when the heating is off. Too low and the boiler won't fire properly — you'll usually see a low pressure warning light.

    3. Test Your Thermostat

Turn it up higher than the current room temperature to check it triggers the boiler. Replace the batteries if it's unresponsive.

    4. Check the Flue

Make sure nothing is blocking your boiler's external flue (the white pipe on your outside wall). Leaves, bird nests, or debris can cause dangerous carbon monoxide build-up.

    5. Book an Annual Service

A Gas Safe registered engineer should service your boiler every year. It keeps your warranty valid and catches problems before they become emergencies.

    When to Call a Professional

If your boiler is making unusual noises, losing pressure frequently, or producing a yellow flame instead of blue, call a Gas Safe engineer immediately. Do not attempt repairs yourself.

If your boiler needs professional attention, request a quote online or call Aphex Heating to check current availability in St Albans.
